Welcome to the Get Involved Edition of the Idaho Energy Update. A number of public comment and engagement opportunities are on tap this month, beginning with Idaho Power public meetings in four cities next week on its Integrated Resource Plan along with a PUC comment deadline on the plan set for Nov. 14. The Legislature’s Interim Energy Committee is also scheduling a day of public comment Nov. 2 and a meeting on Nov. 3 on its efforts to rewrite the 2007 Idaho Energy Plan, while the PUC is holding public hearings three cities on Idaho Power’s big 2011 rate case. Rewriting Idaho's Energy Plan ... Without You -- Ken Miller
By bbrailsford @ 6:07 PM :: 220 Views :: 0 Comments :: Clean and Renewable Energy, Action Alert!
The state entity helping the Legislature revise the 2007 Idaho Energy Plan has finally sent lawmakers its draft 2012 Idaho Energy Plan – but not before utility interests helped “rewrite” the plan by removing recommendations like tax incentives to boost energy efficiency and renewable energy investments.

INL's Waste and Idaho's Water -- Beatrice Brailsford
By bbrailsford @ 5:39 PM :: 220 Views :: 1 Comments :: Nuclear Waste and Contamination, Action Alert!
The Idaho National Laboratory wants to build a new nuclear dump so it can continue to bury very radioactive waste above the Snake River Aquifer for fifty more years. What we’ve seen so far on the plan is an environmental assessment so cursory it cannot be used for a decision as serious as whether or not to bury nuclear waste above Idaho’s drinking water.

Alliance Questions NRC’s OK of Idaho Uranium Factory
Announcement No Surprise, but Need for Enrichment Plant Still Unproven

The federal government continued its unflinching support of a French-owned uranium enrichment factory outside of Idaho Falls Wednesday, but the Snake River Alliance expressed doubt that the plant will be built because the company is on shaky financial footing and because the market for more enriched uranium has collapsed along with the so-called “nuclear renaissance.”

Autumn Member Dinner and Presentation on INL!
By lwoodruff @ 3:40 PM :: 330 Views :: 0 Comments :: Action Alert!
Join the Snake River Alliance for a night of good food, great company, and a new presentation on radioactive waste and cleanup at the Idaho National Lab. With Idaho in the news as a potential interim storage site for new commercial radioactive waste, it is a critical time to learn about what waste is already here. Find out what’s happening with 750,000 barrels of plutonium-contaminated waste dumped in unlined pits and trenches a...bove the Snake River Aquifer. Get an update on liquid high-level waste. The Alliance works diligently to monitor current clean-up efforts and to make sure the public is aware of Department of Energy’s environmental hazards. Our Fall Member Dinner will feature an informative and timely presentation by our nuclear program director, Beatrice Brailsford, who has worked for the Alliance for nearly 25 years. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about what sits above Idaho’s drinking water.

Oct. 4 Idaho Energy Update: New Utility Coal Report, Rate Cases & Idaho Energy Plan Revisions
By lwoodruff @ 12:52 PM :: 130 Views :: 0 Comments :: Clean and Renewable Energy, Idaho Energy Updates
The Snake River Alliance has released the first of two reports on the use of coal-fired generation by Idaho’s three electric utilities, and in a related development Idaho Power has notified the Idaho Public Utilities Commission of the planned early decommissioning of the Boardman coal plant in Oregon, of which Idaho Power is a 10 percent owner. On the regulatory front, parties in Idaho Power’s big 2011 rate case have reached a settlement agreement, but the public will have a chance to weigh in before the PUC decides whether to accept the deal. Meanwhile, Avista’s electric rates and the rates charged by Intermountain Gas will both decline following PUC review of their cases. And the Legislature’s Interim Energy Committee will soon receive draft revisions to the 2007 Idaho Energy Plan, and when it does it will post the plan for public review and comment.

Nuclear Waste and Politics: Dangers Ahead -- Beatrice Brailsford
By bbrailsford @ 1:08 PM :: 314 Views :: 3 Comments :: Nuclear Power, Nuclear Waste and Contamination, Action Alert!
For years now, the nuclear power industry has been telling us that we are in the midst of a “Nuclear Renaissance,” that nuclear power can be re-born again if only the government would do two things: Throw US taxpayer dollars at the corporations that want to build new reactors and uranium enrichment plants. “Solve” the nuclear waste problem.

Idaho's Dangerous Dalliance with King Coal -- Ken Miller
By bbrailsford @ 12:26 PM :: 273 Views :: 0 Comments :: Clean and Renewable Energy, Action Alert!
If the Snake River Alliance has said it once, we’ve said it a million times: Idaho’s misguided reliance on coal-fired power plants for half its electricity is not only bad energy policy, it’s also a health and environmental disaster. Now it’s in writing in our new report, Idaho’s Dangerous Dalliance with King Coal.
