Elmore County Residents Await Decision on Nuke Plant Proposal

Last night, April 22nd, the Elmore County Commission heard from dozens of local residents and other concerned Idahoans that they do not want Prime A Agricultural land to be rezoned for the purpose of building a nuclear power plant less than one-mile from the Snake River. While AEHI’s “job fair” attracted quite a few people eager for employment, testimony throughout the evening made it clear that the job creation claims asserted by the developer will likely never occur and that local residents are not willing to sacrifice the back-bone of their economy—agriculture—for the false promise of jobs at a nuclear power facility. AEHI’s poor planning and management were underscored by testimony which pointed to the unsuitability of the proposed location.
The County Commission may take up to two weeks to make their determination. In the meantime, you can help by writing letters to the editor of your local paper which detail your concerns with this proposal. Some points to consider include: • It’s critical that we don’t sacrifice Idaho farmland and our precious water to a nuclear power plant that would sell its power out of state and leave its radioactive waste here for decades. • AEHI’s proposal is incomplete and full of inaccuracies, including the lack of a feasible reactor design, impossible water use claims, and a complete absence of financing. • Idaho is well-equipped to meet our energy needs through increased efficiency and renewable energy and the power generated at the proposed facility wouldn’t even be for Idahoans. You can submit an LTE to the Statesman at this link: https://forms.idahostatesman.com/lettertoeditor/ Or in these other formats: • Fax it to: (208) 377-6449 • E-mail: editorial@idahostatesman.com • U.S. mail (all envelopes must have a visible return address): Letters to the Editor The Idaho Statesman P.O. Box 40 Boise, ID 83707 Tips for LTE writing • Make your point quickly. • Include your name, address and daytime phone number. Letters without this information are not accepted. • Expect a call to confirm that you are the author of the letter
