Idaho Energy Update Sept. 12: New Nuke Developer Financials, Gas Hike & Transmission Open Houses

The developer of the proposed nuclear reactor near Mountain Home has released an updated financial report showing the company has rolled up a deficit of more than $7.7 million since the project was announced less than two years ago. Meanwhile, the Idaho Public Utilities Commission wants to hear from ratepayers on a proposed natural gas price hike by Intermountain Gas; and the feds are preparing a series of open houses to brief the public and plan an environmental impact statement for a massive electric transmission line that would run from Montana to near Jerome.

MidAmerican Energy announced Sunday they’re withdrawing plans to develop a nuclear power plant northwest of Boise in Payette County. It’s a prudent business decision, and one that Don Gillispie and his colleagues and investors at Alternate Energy Holdings Inc. (AEHI) should heed as they consider the wisdom of building a nuclear plant on the shores of C.J. Strike Reservoir near Bruneau.

Advocates of a nuclear power “renaissance” are basing their appeals on the notion that nuclear power will be an inexpensive way to get new baseload capacity and to combat global warming. However, MidAmerican Nuclear Energy Company, owned by Warren Buffett, has ended its pursuit of a nuclear energy facility in Payette County after the company spent $13 million researching the viability of the location.

Owyhee Nuke Plant Developers Refuse to Comply with Approval Process to Build Towers

Two towers have been built in Owyhee County contrary to Owyhee County’s denial of the towers in early November. One tower is a cellular tower, although there is no contract with a cellular company. The other tower is a meteorological tower designed to gather wind and other data required to process an application to build what could become Idaho’s first commercial nuclear power plant.
