Jan 27 ID Energy Update: Utilities to File Detailed Annual Conservation Reports

Idaho Power and the Public Utilities Commission staff have come to terms on a process to screen energy efficiency measures to ensure they’re doing their jobs and that they’re cost-effective. Meanwhile, 13 lawmakers squeezed into Boise’s Red Feather Lounge this week for an Idaho Energy Collaborative luncheon to share ideas on possible energy legislation in the new 2010 session. Also, the Idaho Department of Labor announced the state has secured a $6 million grant to train workers in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other green vocations. And we've got a great new rap on Areva's uranium proposal for Idaho.

1 15 Energy Update: Idaho Power Rate Moratorium, Energy Plan Report, AEHI, & Micron Goes Solar

The Idaho PUC accepts an unusual settlement between Idaho Power and several customer groups that sets a moratorium on future rate cases until 2012. Meanwhile, the PUC and the Office of Energy Resources file their report to the Legislature on how they believe they are implementing Idaho’s 2007 Energy Plan, and the Payette County Planning and Zoning Commission approves a change to the county’s comprehensive plan that could allow for an eventual rezoning of property as a step toward development of a nuclear reactor. Finally, Micron Technology signs a deal with an Australian firm to get into the solar PV manufacturing business at Micron’s Boise campus.

Jan 8 Idaho Energy Update: Korea Gives Idaho Nuke Developer Reality Check

Just five days after the would-be developer of an Idaho nuclear reactor touted an imminent deal to import Korean nuclear reactors to Idaho, the state-run Korean reactor manufacturer quickly denied the deal is in the works. Also, Idaho Power filed its 2009 “Integrated Resource Plan” with the Idaho PUC, outlining how it expects to meet future energy needs for the coming two decades. Idaho Power also reported to the PUC how it plans to manage the credits it receives from renewable energy projects. And the BLM has released proposed and alternate routes for the proposed Gateway West transmission project that will span southern Idaho.

Dec 18 ID Energy Update: New Geothermal Contract, 2009 Energy Code

Boise-based U.S. Geothermal has signed a contract with Idaho Power to provide up to 25MW of power from its Neal Hot Springs facility that’s being developed in eastern Oregon. Also, the 2010 Legislature is expected to review for adoption the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code. And the EPA has launched a resource-rich website to spur energy-saving measures in our homes.

Dec 11 ID Energy Update: Idaho Power Plan, PUC Comments, Turbines Shipped from Pocatello

Idaho Power has prepared its draft 2009 Integrated Resource Plan, which will guide the company’s energy future over the next 20 years and which will be presented to the Idaho PUC just before Christmas. The PUC is also reviewing Idaho Power’s request to make permanent its energy-saving “decoupling” program, and is taking comments through Dec. 22 on the company’s proposed rate hike moratorium. Also, Nordic Windpower in Pocatello shipped its first turbines, and the Office of Energy Resources sent $1.5 million to 15 recipients for clean energy projects.

Idaho Power and several of its customer groups are asking the Public Utilities Commission to bless an agreement in which the company would freeze new rate cases for two years in exchange for a piece of the annual power cost adjustment. On the nuke front, AEHI continues to play two counties against each other as it dangles its would-be nuclear reactor in front of both.

ID Energy Update 11/6: Federal Energy $$$ to Idaho; Wind & Geothermal Move Forward

Two Idaho industrial giants and two small electric co-ops received good news from the federal government, with JR Simplot and Amalgamated Sugar receiving stimulus funds for efficiency projects, while Fall River Rural Electric and Kootenai Electric landing interest free renewable energy bonds for generation projects. Meanwhile, the Idaho PUC is taking comments on Idaho Power’s latest wind contract and Avista’s north Idaho gas customers will see some major rate relief. And Boise’s U.S. Geothermal now has a construction permit for its Neal Hot Springs project northwest of Boise in Oregon.

ID Energy Update 10 30: Green Energy Stimulus Funds Come to Idaho

Idaho Power this week snagged $47 million in federal energy stimulus funds to speed up deployment of its new high-tech meters and other “smart grid” technologies, while Avista received $20 million and the private Boise-based M2M Communications received $2.2 million to help California reduce peak demand problems with irrigation. And Ridgeline Energy, which is submitting a new application for a wind farm in Bingham County east of Blackfoot, received the green light for another big wind project in Power County south of American Falls. Also, the Blaine County School District is receiving $4 million from the DOE to help heat its schools with geothermal. And don’t forget to submit your comments on the Northwest Power Council’s 6th Power Plan!

The firm hoping to build a nuclear reactor in Idaho has turned its attention to a third site in less than three years – this time to Payette County, where billionaire Warren Buffett spent $13 million exploring a site only to walk away saying it didn’t pencil out. Also, you still have until Nov. 6 to weigh in on the important 6th Power Plan that will help guide the energy future for our region.

ID Energy Update 10 16: Wind in the News, Energy Events Fill Week Ahead

The Idaho PUC approved contracts between Idaho Power and a Boise wind developer that plans to build three wind farms near Hagerman. In other wind news, Ridgeline Energy says it will file a new application in Bingham County for its utility-scale wind project south of the Wolverine Creek wind farm near Idaho Falls. And Idaho Power continues its Fall 2009 Energy Efficiency and Green Living Series with four sessions in Boise starting Monday. And next week’s energy calendar is jammed with everything from an Idaho Environmental Forum session on salmon and hydropower to the Legislature’s Interim Energy Committee, the 23rd annual Idaho Energy & Green Building Conference and the Frank Church Conference on climate issues.
