The determination, intelligence and creativity of Snake River Alliance supporters have been at the forefront in the past weeks at meetings on Areva’s plans to build a uranium factory here and in less public but as important efforts to convince Idaho senators to help ratify the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START).

Monday, September 13, is the deadline for telling the Nuclear Regulatory Commission your objections to Areva’s plan to build its Eagle Rock Enrichment Factory in Idaho. The very same week will see the first vote on START ratification, so Idaho’s senators need to hear from you now. Here’s how to join both debates and encourage others to do so, too.

Avista Utilities, which serves much of northern Idaho’s electric and gas customers, has settled with several customer groups in its current general rate case, and if approved by the PUC the agreement will mean a smaller rate case than proposed. Transmission lines are the theme of the week. The Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service have set a series of scoping meetings to gather public sentiment on Idaho Power’s proposed Boardman to Hemingway transmission line from Owyhee County south of the Snake River to Boardman, Ore., on the Columbia River. Meanwhile, BLM said it’s delaying this summer’s release of an environmental study on the proposed Gateway West transmission line from the coal and renewable energy generation plants in central Wyoming across southern Idaho to the Hemingway substation in Owyhee County to more closely examine such sensitive issues as sage grouse habitat. And Boise- based U.S. Geothermal is making progress on a new geothermal power plant at its San Emidio project in Nevada, while the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has finally agreed to hold a second Idaho hearing on the controversial proposed Areva uranium enrichment factory near Idaho Falls.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will release the draft Environmental Impact Statement on the uranium enrichment plant Areva wants to build in eastern Idaho sometime in July. The NRC has already scheduled a hearing on the draft for August 12 in Idaho Falls. But it looks as if the NRC is going to ignore a request by many Idahoans, including the Mayor of Boise, that it hold an additional hearing on the draft EIS in Idaho’s capital city. You can help catch the NRC’s attention by contacting your Member of Congress right now.
